Millions of teeth are saved with root canal treatment every year. Root canal treatment can help to save your smile and take away pain from an infected or inflamed pulp.
Without root treatment, there may be an abscess formed at the tip of the root and there will be constant and often unbearable pain.
The procedure involves removing the infected pulp inside the tooth. We will then place some medication inside the root canal system to settle it down. If there is no sign of infection or inflammation at the review appointment after the pulp has been removed, then we can proceed to carefully shape and disinfect each canal in the tooth.
Once this has been completed, the tooth is ready to be restored. We will first place a rubber like material inside the canals to seal them and prevent further infection with bacteria. Afterwards, the tooth can be restored with either a filling or a crown.
It is recommended in most instances that the root treated tooth be restored with a crown to maximise the longevity of the root canal treatment and prevent future infections.
Root canal treatments usually take two to three appointments depending on the complexity of the canal system and the level of infection at the tooth.
Saving a natural tooth with root canal treatment has a number of advantages such as:
- Efficient and natural chewing
- Normal biting force and sensation
- Natural appearance
- No unnecessary wear and tear on other teeth.
With proper care, it is possible to have root treated teeth last for as long as other natural teeth in your mouth.
