Your crooked and misaligned teeth, or abnormally positioned jaw, can be a thing of the past with quality braces from Homebush Dental. We’re experts at creating straight, gorgeous teeth that will not only give you back superior chewing and speech functionality, but also look simply amazing. Plus, you’ll benefit from added ease with your oral care routine, meaning tooth decay and gum disease are less likely to occur.

What are braces?

Braces are an orthodontic device that helps correct your teeth and jaw placement. The brace gently moves your teeth, and their roots, into optimal position. It doesn’t happen overnight. Braces are usually fitted for many months – but the results are lifelong. We will generally suggest the use of braces if you have malocclusion (misalignment) of the teeth or jaw. Sometimes it’s obvious when braces are the best course of action. Other times it’s up to a client whether they’d like straighter teeth to maximise oral functionality or to improve their overall aesthetics. Here are a few common indicators that braces are the way to go:

  • Crowded teeth

If your teeth become crowded due to having large teeth, a small jaw or a tooth growing in the wrong spot, teeth will begin to become misaligned and push against each other.

  • Overbite or Underbite

If your top set of teeth cover your bottom set when closed, you most likely have an overbite. If your bottom set of teeth cover your upper set when closed, you probably have an underbite. Getting correct jaw alignment is needed.

  • Protrusion

If your upper teeth sit over your lower lip when closed, you may have a protrusion. This can increase the risk of tooth damage as well as impair speech and eating functionality.

Types of Braces

Orthodontic treatments have come a long way since the traditional, bulky ‘metal mouth’ of yesteryears. Nowadays there are several options when it comes to straightening teeth that are more private, less visible and just as effective.

Metal: The brackets are glued to each individual tooth and wire is threaded through to connect them. This places pressure on the tooth to slowly move into prime position. For additional pressure, elastic bands may be added. The tension is adjusted regularly. This is the most cost effective and traditional treatment.

Clear Ceramic: These work in the same way as metal braces, but using tooth-coloured braces and wires made from clear ceramic. This makes them blend in with your natural teeth and are more unnoticeable and seamless.

Clear Aligners: Invisible and removable, aligners such as Invisalign, are a series of personalised plastic trays that slowly realign your teeth into shape. Even though they are removable, for effective results they should be worn at all times – except when eating and drinking. Clear aligners are more expensive, but more comfortable and discreet.

Braces for children

As your child loses their baby teeth and adult teeth start immerging, you may notice misaligned or crowding teeth. At your child’s regular Dental Checkups, our dentists will be able to monitor this and advice when braces are required. The orthodontic treatment would usually begin once all of the adult teeth have grown to maturity, usually by the mid-teens. As each case is different, please schedule an appointment as soon as you suspect a problem.

What to Expect

After the initial consultation where we will discuss the reasons for an orthodontic treatment and conduct a teeth and jaw examination, we will take plaster casts of your upper and lower jaws to ensure a precise treatment is implemented. Once your braces are made and ready to be fitted, we’ll schedule your next appointment. While braces shouldn’t cause pain once fitted, you will experience a transition period of some discomfort while getting used to the braces’ pressure. Store bought painkillers can be used to minimize discomfort. We also suggest sticking to soft foods, like pasta, soups and yogurt, until you adjust. And remember, simply call the friendly Homebush Dental team if you are concerned or in undue pain.

Unfortunately, your teeth and jaw won’t straighten themselves! But our experts can get you there at an affordable price. Call us today on 02 8084 7242. Your journey to a gorgeous, straight smile with Homebush Dental is just a call away!
