It’s a fact – no one enjoys having their tooth extracted! Whether it’s from fear of the procedure, memories from your childhood of archaic tooth removal practices or just an avoidance of dentists in general, no one looks forward to the dreaded ‘pull’. However, at Homebush Dental we aim to make the process as comfortable and complication free as possible. Our modern extraction procedures are simple and fast. Your overall oral health depends on healthy teeth and will only benefit from a professional and safe tooth removal by our expert dentists.
Signs a tooth extraction is needed
Tooth removal is a last-resort for our dentists. We always try to save teeth using other techniques, but sometimes the damage is too deep.
Signs that a tooth needs extraction include:
- badly decayed teeth
- damaged or cracked teeth
- periodontal disease (gum disease)
- impaction (such as wisdom teeth coming through) or infections
- overcrowding teeth
- cosmetic or aesthetic reasons
How is a tooth extracted?
For most teeth, the process is straightforward and quick. Should a complication arise, or the x-ray show a more complex procedure is necessary, the dentist will explain any further procedures needed.
- An initial x-ray of the tooth will be taken during examination. We’ll determine the best way to remove the tooth during this time.
- Our dentists will numb your mouth using an anesthetic and ensure you feel no pain sensation in the area.
- The tooth will then be removed as fast as practicable by our skilled dentists.
Post-Procedure Tooth Extraction Care
After the anesthetic has worn off, which may take several hours, you may experience some discomfort, pain or bleeding at the site. Our dentists will discuss how to manage any side effects until the tooth socket settles – generally, traditional painkillers are effective and antibiotics may be administered at the dentist’s discretion.
It is vital to be vigilant with your oral hygiene post-procedure to avoid infection, aid healing and minimize discomfort. Some tips to remember:
- Initially, where possible, avoid spitting or rinsing your mouth for 24 hours.
- After 24 hours rinse with warm water mixed with a pinch of salt.
- Use an ice pack to ease any swelling.
- Get lots of rest, eat soft foods and drink plenty of water (avoid alcohol and smoking).
- Avoid touching the extraction site (with fingers, tongue or straws).
- Resume normal brushing of the site after 3 days.

Occasionally, emergency extractions are required, especially if you’ve had an accident and damaged a tooth beyond repair, an infection suddenly takes hold or severe tooth pain is unmanageable. Homebush Dental offer a 24 hour emergency service. See our Services page for more information.
