Gingivitis is the inflammation of gum tissue and is a completely reversible condition. Early signs of gingivitis are swollen red gums that may be tender to touch. If your gums are bleeding after brushing or flossing, you have gingivitis and we need to devise an oral hygiene routine that will reverse the effects of this disease. If gingivitis is not controlled, it can progress to periodontitis.
Periodontitis is where inflammation of the gum tissue leads to tissue destruction and bone resorption. If left untreated, this can lead to teeth being lost. In the early stages, signs and symptoms of periodontitis are similar to that of gingivitis (redness and swelling of gums, bleeding with brushing, bad breath) however, in later stages there will be gum recession which leads to the appearance of teeth getting longer in your mouth. There will be deep pockets between the teeth and gums and teeth will get lose and may fall out.
Periodontitis has also been related to an increased risk of stroke, myocardial infarction and atherosclerosis. Ineffective oral hygiene is the primary cause of periodontitis, but it may be exacerbated by other factors such as diabetes and smoking.
If you are at high risk of gum disease, we recommend that you come for check ups at least four times a year.
