Fissure Sealants

Fissures are naturally occurring grooves on the biting surfaces of teeth and if they are particularly deep and narrow, it is impossible for ordinary tooth brush bristles to get inside and clean them.  This results in food and bacteria getting trapped in the fissures which will lead to tooth decay.  Fissure sealants are tooth colored protective coating that can be applied in a painless and non invasive manner to at-risk fissures in order to reduce the likelihood of tooth decay development.  Sealants often wear away after a number of years and may need to be reapplied if required.

fissue-and-dental-sealantThe best time for fissure sealants to be placed is as soon as the permanent teeth have erupted, however it is better late than never, and we may recommend that yours or your child’s at-risk fissures get sealed to prevent decay and fillings in the future.

Please note that whilst an intact fissure sealant offers excellent protection against decay on the treated surface, we cannot guarantee that getting fissure sealants will prevent decay on all tooth surfaces as an untreated surface can still be prone to decay.  So it is important to brush and floss regularly and limit the consumption of sugary foods and drinks.

There are no reported side effects of having fissure sealants applied, however, please discuss any concerns you have with us.

Sealed teeth require no dietary changes or special home care but we do recommend that you attend for regular (6 monthly) check ups so we can assess the condition of the seal and add to the material if required.
