Fissures are the deep grooves present on teeth that are most notable in the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (the molar and premolar teeth). According to the Australian Dental Association, fissures are the most at risk of developing tooth decay. They are up to five times more likely to experience tooth decay than any other surface. Research has shown that a fissure that is completely sealed has 100% protection from tooth decay.
A fissure sealant is essentially a protective coating that can be applied to the fissures. This prevents bacteria from adhering to these hard to clean surfaces and ensures protection from tooth decay. Even with wear over time, studies have shown that a sealed tooth is protected compared with an unsealed one (about half the risk after five years of fissure sealant placement).
Fissure seals are often recommended as soon as the permanent molars erupt in 6 year old children as this is the age where their manual dexterity is often not adequate for oral hygiene and the newly erupted teeth have deep fissures where bacteria can lurk. When fissure seals wear off they may need reapplication as assessed by your dentist.
Fissure sealants are a conservative, painless and non invasive preventative treatment. There will be no injections or drilling involved. The child can eat and drink normally immediately after the procedure. Combined with regular dental check ups, a good oral hygiene routine, and a healthy diet, fissure sealants are an excellent preventive measure that lowers the dental decay experience of children so call us now on 02 8084 7242 to book your child in for their check up!
